What is pupil premium?

In 2011, the Government launched its 'Pupil Premium' funding, also known as funding for disadvantaged children. The money is given to schools based on the number of pupils in the school who are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). The qualifying criteria include children (i) who receive free school meals, (ii) who are in the care of a local authority (e.g. fostered), (iii) who have recently left the care of a local authority (e.g. adopted), (iv) who have a parent who is a serving member of the armed forces.

If your child does not currently have Free School Meals but may be eligible because of your family’s income level (or because of other criteria stated above), please contact the office (in confidence) to register them. Even if you do not wish them to have meals, the school can still claim the Pupil Premium funding that may be used to help your child.

Our Aim is to use Pupil Premium to raise the attainment and achievement of Pupil Premium pupils to match that of all pupils in the school.

How do we target children to meet our aim?

• We review the progress of all pupils in the school each term and as part of this process we look at all pupils for whom the school receives PP.

• We identify children who are not making expected progress or are vulnerable in progress terms, identify in which areas they are at risk of not making expected progress and  target these children with appropriate support.

• Money can be used on additional staffing - teaching or teaching assistant - to raise levels in English and Maths.

• Money can also be spent on provision of social and emotional support to support positive social and learning behaviours.

• Finally, it can be used to enhance experiences and increase access to narrow the gap with non-pupil premium children.
